Sprint Settles Lawsuit; Treocast Gets Paid

sprint_settlement_small I was notified today that Sprint has finally settled the Treo 600 class action suit that they have been battling for so long.

Granted, I had no idea that this lawsuit was happening. But I did own a Treo 600 back in 2004. As a matter of fact, it was the second in a long line of Treo phones that I've owned. (You never forget your first.)

Apparently some Treo owners took the promise of WiFi and Bluetooth literally and became upset when Palm didn't deliver. Rather than play around with every add-on gadget out there to solve the problem as I did (including this brick-expander) some decided to band together and take on Palm on behalf of Treo owners everywhere.

The result: I get a coupon for $27.50 to spend on the Palm web site any way I want.  Can't beat that! I wonder what other lawsuits I'm tied up in that will be cashing in soon. Is there an app for that?

Sprint Picks Twitter

I saw this Sprint commercial tonight and thought it was interesting that they mention Twitter by name. Do any of the other similar (and arguably better) services even stand a chance anymore?

Nokia N810 WiMax... and?

N810-WME There's a whole lot of talk about the announcement of Nokia's new WiMax edition of their N810 Internet Tablet. My question is: so what?

Did I miss something? Has WiMax been deployed to any great extent? Sure, there's been a lot of plans, the most notable coming from Sprint. But even their intentions now seem to be unclear.

I have a Nokia N810 and I do love it. But unless the new edition replaces the old one on store shelves, for the same money, I don't see the point. The standard N810 connects to any WiFi hotspot or uses my (Sprint) cell phone's EVDO connection via Bluetooth for internet access.

It seems to me, by the time WiMax is deployed to any great degree, the N810 will probably be phased out. So what's all the noise about?

Mobile Shopping

Sprint's launched a new (or at least new to me) mobile shopping system. I've played around with it and its actually pretty interesting. In a nutshell, you register your account and credit card at http://mobileshopper.sprint.com. When you are out and about, you can browse to their mobile-friendly site (they will send your phone a link when you register) and check the price.

You only have to type in a partial name, make, etc. and they'll confirm the product with a picture before presenting you with the best price they have. If you really want it, a simple click or two then orders the item and ships it to your registered address.

Here's a demo clip on how it works:

The New Phone Arrived Today

My new Sprint UpStage phone arrived today which, being a Saturday, took me by surprise. I already had my day planned out so I wasn't prepared to play with it a whole lot. But I did snap a new pictures and carried it around with me for the afternoon.

The first thing I did of course was connect it to my computer and load myPodder onto it. Works like a champ! And I quickly discovered that not only will it download all of my podcasts, it will play them through the speaker so I can sit at my desk and listen without headphones... nice!

Beyond that, here are my first impressions:

The Samsung M620 aka UpStage

I'm totally making a guess here, but I think this is the "Yet To Be Released" phone that Sprint mentioned in their Ambassador Program letter.

I'm going way out here on a limb (sarcasm), but the other choice of phones in the program is the Samsung M610, and being a dual-faced phone this would certainly be redefining "flip" as it pertains to cell phones in this day and age - and the specs match.

I find the overall idea of this phone very exciting though. Expandable with an SD card of some type meaning I can make it 'podcastready'. Stereo bluetooth headset plus external speakers for listening without headphones (I do that a lot at my desk with my N800).

I have always preferred the "candy bar" design and although I will say now I am not convinced that a dual-faced phone it going to work for me, I do hope this is the one nonetheless because it seems like it would be a really fun phone to play with.

That's Ambassador Treocast, Thank You

Sprint is kicking off phase 3 of their Ambassador Program and I'm pleased to have been selected as one of the 150 people asked to participate. I was part of Phase 1, but was not asked back for Phase 2 and pretty much thought that's where it would end... and then I got my invite.

This time around I was given a choice of phones: either the Samsung M610 or a Yet-To-Be-Released (YTBR) model that they describe as a
"pre-launch device that will redefine the term 'flip'... designed for those tech-savvy and music centric personalities, who want and need the latest technologies."
Which do you think I asked for?

The YTBR phone is assigned on a "first come, first served" basis, so I really don't know which I will get. I'll certainly be blogging a lot about whichever device it is, and chronicling my experiences as I try to duplicate everything I currently do on my Treo 700p on the new phone. I've even been given permission to give it away at the end of the program :)

I have no idea when the new phone will arrive, so stay tuned.

Changing the game of wireless service

This should be interesting: According to BusinessWeek.com Sprint is offering unlimited talk-time for $120. What's the catch? It's only in San Fransisco and its a limited-time offer. But as this article suggests, if the interest is there they will role the plan out to their other markets. Add to that unlimited data service for $30 and suddenly things change... for everyone - the other carriers will certainly have to follow suit with something similar and all of those new mobile services will really start to see some traction.
