Hey. My name is Russell Holliman. I'm a professional project manager by day, and one of the founders of Podcast Ready by night. This is my blog about life on the web, life in general, and random things I find here and there.

DNC 2008 Speeches as Podcasts

Some select speeches from the recent Democratic National Convention have been compiled and are available either through iTunes or via this podcast feed. They are in M4V format however, so you portable video player might not be compatible if its not an iPod.

It seems odd to me that they wouldn't want to use a format that's more compatible with all of the players on the market.

Of course, that's only odd until I realized that the files are hosted by Apple directly; I wonder if Apple is going to do the same for the Republicans, or if this is a political statement.

Flash for the iPhone

ai_appicon_02According to Engadget, Adobe has announced that they will develop a version of Flash for the iPhone using Apple's recently released iPhone SDK.  According to rumors, iPhone apps will be available only through iTunes. So the question is, will Flash for the iPhone be free or will Apple be getting a little extra bite from each iPhone owner?

iTunes Movie Rentals

iTunes has launched their movie rental system and it looks pretty much what I expected. One thing I noticed, and this is the same with others like Movielink and Amazon: you can rent the video for 30 days, but once you start playing it you only have 24 hours to finish before it deletes itself. Can someone explain to me why this is?

Neat Mac Widget: TV Forcast

I ran across a neat little Mac widget tonight: TV Forecast. You simply tell it what shows you are interested in catching and it tells you when the next episodes are up. And if the episode is available form iTunes, you can simply click and buy. Pretty handy for shows like "Terminator" which is available per episode but not as a season subscription.

Amazon's DRM-Free Music Store

It certainly doesn't seem to have the selection of iTunes, but its cheaper and it comes without DRM. That alone is enough to make Amazon's new music store my first stop the next time I'm in search of a song.

Downloading a single track and bringing it into iTunes for my iPod was just what you'd expect: download to desktop, drag into iTunes, sync. On the Windows side, its only slightly more complicated.

To alleviate all this work though, Amazon offers a download helper (required for full album purchases) that retrieves the new purchase and throws it into iTunes or Microsoft Media Player automatically.

Wal-Mart Selling DRM-Free, Cheaper Songs

Wal-Mart is selling DRM-free MP3's cheaper than iTunes. The DRM-free status of the music is certainly news, and the fact that they are selling MP3's and not WMA'a means that their songs will play on virtually any of the players on the market including the iPod. Is that, when combined with the $0.94 price for a song enough to take some business away from iTunes? Source: Yahoo News

"A is for Asthma" and other childhood favorites

This is certainly not the Sesame Street that I remember from my childhood.

All of the episodes are free on iTunes and include other interesting titles such as: A is for Asthma: Elmo and Rosita learn what to do when their friend has trouble breathing and Lead Away: Oscar, Elmo, and Rosita learn how to protect themselves from the dangers of lead.

Its a scary new world.

iTunes exists to sell iPods

or is it the other way around? Talking to so many device manufacturers about providing content places me in the middle of this debate almost daily. There are a myriad of reasons why I have formed my own opinion (see the title) but I have to admit I don't have any definitive proof.

I do like to point to things like todays report from Apple on their earnings though. $7.1 billion in revenue translating into $1 billion in profit. They had a 28% growth in Mac sales and a 50% growth in iPod sales. But throughout the report the word iTunes is only used once, in the last paragraph:
Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning desktop and notebook computers, OS X operating system, and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital music revolution with its iPod portable music players and iTunes online store.
The fact that their earnings from the iTunes Music Store isn't even hinted at in their release indicates to me that its not a significant piece of their revenue.
