We're sitting here watching SNL for the first time in years (waiting to see if Palin is going to make another appearance) when this ad ran on the television. I assumed it was an SNL skit but no, its a real campaign ad.

The Bright and Shiny
Tuesday, February 05, 2008
Tech Crunch reports on a new eMarketer article saying that podcast are "taking off (again)." The funny thing is, that's not what it says. It simply reports on the steady and continued growth in podcast advertising that is expected to reach $435M by 2012. The market itself has seen nothing but constant growth.
It hasn't been, however, bright and shiny. Just as quickly as it hit the scene, podcasting moved on to be an industry... a media market. The hype died, but the industry grew (thanks mostly to the major media outlets according to eMarketer). As someone that's tried very hard to raise additional capital for their podcasting endeavor, I can tell you that it doesn't matter. Its a business now, and no longer very bright and shiny, and that means that most investors these days just aren't interested.Labels: advertising, emarketing, podcast, Podcast Ready, podcasting, tech crunch

Facebook's Relevant Ads
Tuesday, September 11, 2007
I found this in my Facebook Newsfeed today:

They got the "ad" part right, now they just need to work on that "relevant" thing.

User Generated Branding

Doritos is having a contest to name a new flavor chip. Its not a new concept, and not a great contest if you ask me. The consumer is asked to buy the chips in the store, taste them, then submit a name. The winner gets a year supply of the chips... big deal.
If you go to the site though, there is a side contest: they have posted two commercials without dialog. Make up the dialog and win. Actually, the commercials they have posted now are the best. The actors are all playing out the scene saying "blah blah, blah blah blah blah... " - that pretty much sums up Doritos for me.Labels: advertising, user generated content

Free Lunch?
Sunday, June 10, 2007
I stopped in at Willie's this evening for dinner. Willie's is the kind of place where you order at the counter, but then when you sit a waiter brings the food and takes care of you for the rest of the meal. Everything you need is already on table: utensils, condiments, and a roll of paper towels for napkins.Tonight I noticed that they had an ad for Bounty paper towels on the holder. I started thinking about the restaurant business. You know, the actual cost of the food in most of the places is cheap; I've had 2 and 3 times the amount of my invoices to restaurants paid in food because it was still cheaper for them.
How much advertising would it take to pay for a meal? People are already willing to accept advertising for free email, and other on-line services. I've heard rumors of one cell phone company that would provide free ad-supported phone service. How long before a restaurant opens that provides free or really cheap meals in exchange for ad placement?
