Science Friday look at Second Life
Wednesday, September 05, 2007
Ira Flatow (Flatley as shown here) hosts an episode of NPR's Science Friday from Second Life. The topic: Second Life - but from a slightly different angle. He talks with folks about the science behind the behavior of virtual worlds. You can check out the post here, the podcast here, and of course if you are subscribed to my podcast channel then you probably already have the show.

Stripped Down SL Client - SLeek
Thursday, July 19, 2007
A site called Delta's Online Corner has available for download a beta of SLeek - a bare minimum SL client for machines that can't run the full product or for people that just want to chat and manage inventory.

I'm testing it out now, and although its not bullet-proof (it is a beta) it seems to work pretty well. I image that my avatar is just sitting there in SL (you can see anything in this client) but all I'm interested in is a thin IM client, which this seems to be. Perfect for me...

Second Life Service
Wednesday, May 16, 2007
A follow-up to my little fit about Second Life's customer support... they did finally allow my comment to be posted on the blog, and I received an email on the 11th from Jack Linden with the phone number to the support services.

My Comment on the Second Life Blog
Monday, May 07, 2007
The folks over at the Second Life blog have a reputation for not allowing negative comments on their postings.

I guess they are debating whether to post it this one or not. More likely though, they are waiting to see if enough comments will come after it so that no one will notice this one slipped into the middle.
UPDATE 9:25pm - Its been over an hour, and two additional comments since mine, and mine still has not been posted. I think its pretty safe to say they are playing games
UPDATE 11:33pm - Three hours later and its not posted. Oh well, its their blog right? I've been nice, and I've been snarky... at least they are consistent. :)

Another Second Life Marketing Failure?
Thursday, April 05, 2007
Second Life Insider mentioned this morning that Geek Squad, the tech support group from Best Buy, is the latest real world entity to jump into Second Life. The question is: WHY?Is it merely to have a presence and play some poker? Surely they can't see it as a potentially important marketing exercise. According to the article, residents in Second Life won't have to be part of any Best Buy plan to receive help. Exactly what kind of help do they think Second Life residents will need?
Let face it, if your in Second Life its pretty safe to assume that your machine is in good shape. It also stands to reason that you probably know what you are doing, when it comes to technology at least. The people who are shelling out $50 to learn how to put music on their MP3 player are not likely to be logging into SL to get the answer...

Second Life Voice
Tuesday, March 06, 2007
Hat tip to The Diva - she twitted tonight about a video she saw demonstrating the Linden's implementation of voice in Second Life.
I don't know if its for real or not but the real thing couldn't be that different I would imagine. My question is, what are 80% of the female characters (the ones that are really men) going to do now?

Galveston, oh Galveston
Monday, February 19, 2007

They were one of, if not the first city in the U.S. to have an official podcast, and now they are the first city to have an official spot in Second Life.

Virtually Snubbed
Tuesday, February 13, 2007
or perhaps that should read "Snubbed, virtually."Invited to a Valentine's Party... told to get ready, and wait for instructions... and then: nothing.
Bad memories of a cruel joke perpetrated by the head cheerleader on the class geek?
Nope, just another example of the Linden's ineptness when it comes to communication and customer service.
Now, I know I'm not the biggest customer they have... with only a little over two "sims" of land we probably don't even show up on their radar. The fees do add up though (and to a lot more than the 4-pack of 'tootie-fruitie' wine coolers required for the cheerleader). Its a decent sized investment for a small startup company, and the support and positive press that we've been able to contribute should count for something. And yet, in typical Linden fashion... no word... no communication... and no party.
I really think these guys are on to something big, and there are a lot of marketing and social network folks out there that agree. But until they start taking it (and their customers) seriously, they are never going to take it to the next level - and by "next level" I mean being known primarily as something other than the world's largest virtual porn site.

Linden Lab's Gets It
Tuesday, January 23, 2007

As pointed out this morning on the Second Life Insider, Linden Labs (Second Life) have taken the parody site "Get a First Life" just as it was intended. They've even gone so far as to grant Get a First Life the rights to use their modified Second Life logo on T-Shirts for sale on their site.
If you are an avid Second Life user, you might find this funny... you might consider it therapy. Either why, it's clever.
