Another Sign That Houston Media Just Does Not Get It
Wednesday, May 25, 2005
On a day when NBC and ABC are jumping on the podcast bandwagon, and in a month that has seen the debut of Podshow on Sirius radio as well as “Open Source Radio” on KYOU, Houston’s own KPFT radio gets in on the game. Well, sort of.
At least they are referring to MP3 players when describing their new show set to air this Tuesday from 4am – 6am. Ernesto Aguilar, the program director, just handed Dwight (a host of “Technology Bytes” on KPFT Wednesdays) during tonight show stating:
i'll be incorporating your idea of playing mp3 lists/players on-the-air, starting Tuesday morning, 4-6 a.m. email ernesto@kpft.org if ppl are interested.
After a little clarification in the IRC chat that occurs during every show, they really are asking folks to bring in their MP3 players and they will play it’s contents (presumably in a random order) for two hours.
I am going to submit my player loaded with podcasts. Any suggestions?

Another Awards Event
Monday, May 23, 2005

After posting my last podcast in which I talk about the upcoming Podcastawards.com event, I was made aware of another awards event brought to us by Topcast.org. Topcast’s deadline for nominations is roughly the same as the start date for Podcastawards nominations, and both ceremonies are set to take place this November… one in California and the other in New York. Can’t seem to find out if they are connected in any way, but at first glance they do not appear to be…

Speaking of Interviews...
Friday, May 20, 2005
Of course by now you've heard about Dave's reaction to an (edited) interview that appeared on Wired's website. Well, another interview with Adam has appeared on ZDnet, and here Adam directly contradicts at least one thing that Dave said:
Alorie Gilbert: Speaking of Dave Winer, he was sort of ranting on his blog recently about all the credit you're getting around podcasting. Have you guys had a little fallout recently?Hmm.
Curry: I asked him to create that last piece. He didn't. I programmed it. I'm not a programmer, so I had to learn how to program. It took me quite a while. And then I put it out in open source and said here's this thing I've created called an iPodder, which is the name I came up with, and I built it. And it was built on all these existing technologies, and people started to get excited about it, particularly software developers, of which Dave Winer usually doesn't get along with very well. And, they started building their own versions and I started creating a show, specifically for these developers called the "Daily Source Code," thinking that would probably appeal to them.
The fact is, Adam here knows how to win this battle: it's all PR. Adam is getting his message out to the general public who have no idea what the history behind all of this is (and probably really does not care). And frankly, those that have been following it for the last eight months might not be totally clear on all the facts. But while Dave rants to the community, Adam preaches to the masses.

Dave writes
Tuesday, May 17, 2005
about the Newsweek situation today, stating:
Why don't we immediately assume that all press reports are at least as thinly sourced as the Newsweek story, and not make a big deal of it when we discover that one is.
But then, if we did that, we would not be able to really bitch about interviews when they got the facts all wrong...

Old Dogs and New Tricks
Monday, May 16, 2005
Dwight Silverman, the tech writer for the Houston Chronicle, has just started blogging (again) and I am learning some interesting stuff. Dwight is a co-host of that Wednesday night radio program I talk about a lot…the one where we sit around drinking and making fun of the hosts and the callers…
Apparently Dwight tried to use a Mac exclusively for 14 days, but only made it ten. I thought this was of particular interest to me as I have been switching over to my Mac Mini as well. His original conclusion included the following statement:
I found I really missed using Windows. I missed the layout, the look-and-feel, the ability to tweak and futz with impunity, the endless supply of freeware and shareware. While the Mac was pretty, simple and easy to use, I constantly felt like I was having to battle constraints to use it. . . . As a result, I only lasted 10 days with the mini. I wasn't displeased with it. But it just didn't feel like home.
Heck, I can’t even right-click on an icon to bring up it’s properties 100% of the time with impunity in Windows. And I don't find the Mac constraining at all, except for the lack of audio inputs (and not enough USB ports).
But I think the one comment that really brings things into perspective was by “John” who wrote:
I still think a system that sends you to the START menu to turn the computer OFF has the weirdness market cornered!

"Is This Thing On?"
Saturday, May 14, 2005
The web site is back up, for now. Very disappointed in the way the ISP handled the situation. But there are others who think it was handled very well… but of course, they're a sponsor...
Friday the 13th on Podcast Island, or as we like to call it: "The Yawn Heard Round The World"
1. Podshow Debut

2. Things heat up between Dave and Adam with this posting from Dave's web site

3. Geeknewscentral's Big 64th Show

4. Geekcast with all of 281 subscribers scores a three part interview with Leo Laporte
5. Podcasting Specification Working Group
"Cut To The Chase" - Samsung YP-T7z

Pros:
- Small, really small, and weighs next to nothing
- 10 hours battery life
- 1 gig storage
- Great sound output
- FM Tuner with recorder and timer
Cons:
- Operation is not intuitive and difficult at times
- Microphone way too sensitive to touch, but not sensitive enough for voice - no adjustments
- USB port covered by a rubber flap that will eventually rip off
Cut to the chase: good, but not $200 good

Things Get A Little Heated...
…between Dave and Adam. From Dave’s blog:
I winced a half-dozen times reading this interview with Adam Curry. He didn't invent podcasting, he didn't figure out that RSS would be a good transport. And he didn't write the first iPodder. Here's what Adam actually did do. He figured out the last yard was important and worked tirelessly to get people to listen to him. I was the only one who did, and I turned that idea into RSS with enclosures, and wrote the first iPodder, in 2001, three years before Adam claims to have done all this stuff. I never denied him credit for his role in this work, quite the opposite, I praised him every way I could for his insight. I also did regular podcasts for a couple of months before he started. He was listening to them, calling me all the time, ecstatic at how I was reinventing radio. There are a couple of ideas in Daily Source Code that didn't come from me, and for that Adam deserves full credit and our thanks. But these lies have gone on and on, he just doesn't stop.
Thing is -- Adam's star is fading, again. At some point he's going to need some friends, and then I'm going to kick him in the ass, and then look him in the eye and say "Shouldn't have lied so much, dickhead."

Where's Adam?
So, I am very certain that Adam said Podshow was on Sirius 148 from 6am-10am Eastern. That translates to 5am-9am Houston. At 8:45am I tuned in to hear.... someone else. So I checked the recordings of the station (yes, I set up a server to record the channel 24/7 just in case) and there is no Adam.
Something else that is strange is that Sirius just put up information on Podshow this morning at midnight - before that they have not said a word about the show. Kind of strange for a network that is "enbracing" the podcasting community, don't you think? And even still, they talk about Adam and they talk about Podshow, but evenn Sirius does not list the schedule.
Of course, after playing with Sirius for a while now, I have come to realize that channel 148 is also home to several other radio programs who's producer pay Sirius to get on the air. Adam is sharing channel space with GoDaddy Radio! (At least they have the cash to buy airtime on XM as well).
So maybe this Sirius deal isn't quite what everyone assumed it was...

05/12 "Hell Week" TPC
Well, it seems that my new ISP has had some very serious issues of the last couple of days, which has translated into my sites (all of them) as well as all of the sites of all of his customers (it seems to have been a big issue) going down.
My apologies.
Of course, to date I still have no explanation as to what happened and have yet to receive really any communication from my ISP.... I might have to rethink this decision.
In any case, here is the TPC for 05/12.
Show notes to come - listen to the episode and you'll understand the delay. Thanks.

Sirius Podshow Test
Wednesday, May 11, 2005
Okay, so granted… I’m only five minutes into Adam Curry’s Podshow “test” podcast and already I have two observations:
- It’s going to “air” on Sirius channel 148 from 5am to 9am CST here in Houston – is this thing also going out as a podcast? Cause I am not going out of my way at 5am to hear this…. not even for Adam. So in less than 5 minutes podcasts’ first entry into the mainstream falls right into the trappings of traditional media: bad scheduling.
- So far I think this show would be more appropriately titled: “Adam Curry’s Egocast”
More observations to come…

Macworld Podcasting Tutorial
Macworld has a fairly good intro to the world of podcasting, if you are thinking of starting one of your own. Interestingly enough, when they get to the part about promoting your podcast, they mention Podcastalley and the iPodderX Directory, but fail to mention Curry’s iPodder.org or Podshow… perhaps they already know that Podcastalley is now affiliated with Podshow and to mention any others would be redundant. 05/04 "Lessons Learned" TPC
Thursday, May 05, 2005
A little bit longer and a little but more subdued than normal; today’s podcast includes commentary on such items as:

A live “as it happens” revue of Wolfgang Puck’s instant latte. You can find information on it at www.wpgourmetlattes.com and on the technology behind the self-heating can at www.ontech.com.
Computer update: I still love my Mac, but have a few questions. Like, how do I nuke everything in iCal and force iSync to over-write it with what is in my Treo?
Iron Mountain loses several boxes of un-encrypted backup tapes containing Time Warner personnel information…
Podcast Island: we learned that Ron doesn’t get it, Adam – the jury is out; Podcastalley (go vote for me) is now affiliated with the both of them, making it’s independent site a little less so…
Castfire has already begun putting advertisers and podcasters together…
Podsurfing: the act of driving around with your radio tuned to 88.1 looking for others with iPods and FM transmitters.
The new convertible mini is out: $24,900 for 2,844 pounds of car = $8.75 a pound. How does that compare to other vehicles?
Tony Blair is up for reelection in a couple of hours… you think Bush is staying awake for this one?
Texas is trying to pass laws prohibiting you from getting a liquor license if someone in your family has been turned down for one in the past.
Texas outlaws “suggestive” cheerleading, but does not define it, nor does it set penalties or guidelines for enforcement…
“News You Can Lose” – I have grown weary of retyping all of those articles every week. So instead I set up an account over at Bloglines, where I can just click on articles and post them to a Bloglines Blog for you to access the stories if you so desire…

Stupid Mac/Treo Question
Monday, May 02, 2005
I started out syncing my Treo with iCal, Address Book, etc. and then switched at one point when I got Office to syncing with Entourage. Well, I really don't care for Entourage at this point, and would like to go back.
Can someone let me know how I can basically "nuke" everything that is in my iCal, Address Book, etc and over-write it with what is current in my Treo? It's very easy to configure in the conduits for Entourage, but I cannot for the life of me figure it our for iCal, etc.
Thanks!
