X-treme geek Catalog
Thursday, March 24, 2005
It’s catalog day here at the Holliman household. And I received “X-Treme Geek.” In addition to some really cool gadgets they have several pages of Japanese snacks… I have no idea why. And I can’t believe people eat this stuff. Like Squid Jerky???

Direct from the Sea of Japan... it's dried, salted and shredded squid! In Japan, this popular chewy snack can be found in convenience stores right next to potato chips.
Or my personal favorite: Bourbon Every Burger Cookies! (I think something was lost in the translation there)
Have you ever had a bite-size burger? Bourbon Every Burger Choco Cookies aretiny, cute and really tasty! These mini-burgers made of biscuit "buns", chocolate "patties", and a milky "cheese" layer. Comes in a box with two individually wrapped bags with 8 burgers per bag, great for sharing with friends! Sold in packages of 3 for a total of 48 mini-burgers! YUM!

of so many in the podcasting community prematurely begging for money. At least you can opt out and never receive the message again...for this revision anyway. But I guess with so many bugs they cant come right out and sell the thing.
But then again, if you subscribe to that logic, Microsoft should have started begging for donations years ago.

03/19 "Beware of Companies with Short Names" TPC
A big rant about my recent experience with SBC. Why is it that the bigger a company gets, and the worse their service becomes, so too does their name shorten? They were great when they were known as Southwestern Bell Telephone…
If you don't care to hear it, fast-forward to about 13:00 and pick up the podcast at the end of the rant.
The Houston Chronicle front page for Saturday, March 19, 2005. Top item you should know? Why, it's the NCAA Fencing Championships! Woohoo. I feel informed. And A few other articles critiqued.
Texas Legislature wants to regulate Texas Cheerleading… forget about Texas for just a minute. That’s just down right un-American!
But back to Texas, if you are not familiar with Texas High School Football check out "Friday Night Lights" and see what Texas Cheerleading and High School Football is all about here in the Lone Star State.
Three kids in Florida kidnap another and ransom him for $50…
Openpodcast.org - are you listening? Or do you just get the re-cap from Adam Curry? I get a little irritated by all the full-fledged shows that appear on my Treo because they are submitted to Openpodcast.org. On the other hand, it's easy enough to delete them every morning… just annoying.
On funny "Adam Curry Mention Me" submission came from one of my favorites: bugcast. Check them out at nogagreflex.com.

PodLot.com - Podcasting Hosting...
Podlot.com has launched several different hosting packages targeted specifically at storing large quantities of podcasts online for easy distribution. This seems to be a growing trend, and I would bet before too long you will see hundreds of these companies. The pricing seems very affordable but these guys need to invest in some website design. I personally don’t trust any service that looks like it was design by a small child back in the early 90’s.
Make up your own mind though.
Hey now. I actually did create that web site back in the 90's as a small child. But no one had even heard of podcasting then, and no one listens to small children...
Seriously, I know it sucks. And one of our web guys is working on it now. But really, we can't make it look too good, or it would be even more swamped than it is now.

03/17 "Come to Jesus" TPC
Question of the day: If you put a podcast out there, and no one downloads it, is it a podcast?
Big news of the day? Infostructure Solutions, LLC – the parent company of mobilepodcast.org – has committed to continue this particular project for another year, devote more time and resources to participating in the podcast community, and continue to contribute where possible.
To that end, we have reserve a large chunk of space and have begun selling file storage sites under the domain: podlot.com. We all know that bandwidth has become a big concern with podcasters today, and we think we have found a way to help. Podlot.com can supply the storage space for your actual podcast files – you maintain your regular web site, blog, etc – and the bandwidth for the RSS feed is taken from podlot. At what cost? $4 for unlimited bandwidth.
Test it out for yourself, and maybe found out about a few podcasts that you might not know about.
Infostructure Solutions is committed to helping the podcast community and has strong desire to keep the phenomenon strong and growing.
Okay, enough about that… (and no, we won’t be talking about it a lot during future shows – that’s not what the mobilepodcast.org project is all about)
My trip to “South by Southwest” is over. It was a lot of fun, but I was a little disappointed over all. But I think too it’s because I was already aware of most everything was discussed. The general audience though, well, that’s a different story. So in short, I was not their target audience.

Last time, I promise: go check out Barry Dobyn’s “Nothing to Declare” podcast. It’s very clever.
Also too, subscribe to our social station on GigaDial. It’s an RSS feed that contains shows that other listeners add. It’s very simple, just go to GigaDial and find the show. Add it to the station titled “mobilepodcast.org open station” and everyone else that’s subscribed will get it. It’s a great social tool to turn others onto podcasts.
And no one can do a podcast this week without at least mentioning Adam Curry and podshow.com. All I can say is, at least Curry seems to get it. I heard a podcast this weekend where on the one hand they were forming a network – very elitist – and you can beg to join if you feel lucky. But on the other hand they were looking for some guru’s to do some (free) server and web work to help support the “community.” Of course, some would say that it’s exactly what Curry’s done…
Portable Firefox and portable Thunderbird. This means that you can run both (complete with bookmarks, cookies, email account settings, messages, etc.) from a portable disk like a thumbdrive and never have to install anything on the workstation. This is great if you work machines are locked down…
This weekend the same news reported that Americans are becoming to overly obese that the majority are destine to die before their time, while social security is going bankrupt. Why don’t we just subsidise McDonald’s and solve the problem…

The “Beer Can House” here in Houston gets a $125,000 grant for maintenance and upkeep…
Housekeeping note: testing the new version (2.5) of P.A.R. Pro. Works well but there is a bug in the recorded time reading… it does not read.

Just when you thought Firefox couldn't get any better...
Tuesday, March 15, 2005
how about portable?
That’s right. Apparently some folks have taken Firefox and Thunderbird and made them portable. What does that mean? It means that you can carry Firefox (with all of your bookmarks, etc.) and Thunderbird (with all of your emails, etc.) on a thumbdrive, and use them on any machine without installing the programs or changing the computer in any way.

John Edwards to Podcast
Hey, whether you like him or not, you have to give him (or at least someone on his staff) for keeping up with this stuff and getting involved. How long did it take for the first major political figure to get involved in blogging? And besides, audio is a much more suitable medium for these guys… It’s so much easier to blow smoke up someone’s skirt with speech than with writing; just ask Tom Marino.

Ron Bloom and Adam Curry Lauch podshow.com
Sunday, March 13, 2005
I just now saw this on Fox News… it might be old, but it was not to me. Ron Bloom was interviewed about podcating and his new site: podshow.com. He mentioned that Adam Curry was his partner, and continuously referrred to the programming as ‘podshows’ rather than ‘podcasts’.
I sent the audio file out through openpodcast.org, but you can download it from http://www.mobilepodcast.org/casts/misc/20050313_podshow.mp3 if you missed it.

- A slightly more thorough review of the Aiptek Music Capsule
- Some more hate mail from people who expected the Treo Podcast to be somehow related to the Treo (for whatever reason)

Short and sweet so I can get back to the beautiful weather and the grill…

Some podcast recommendations:
- nothingtodelcare.com – improved audio and a follow-up to my “Texas” podcast
- Geek Fu Action Grip – another great personal podcast
- History according to Bob – Jimmy Jett’s sidekick perhaps? moonlighting on the side…
Troll #1209 sucks a lot of podcasters into his world…
Houston passes a ban on cigarette smoking in public, sort of. Great. Now that we finally have that settled, what are we going to do about the utter lack of police officers in this city?

More teachers in the news. This time its a substitute teacher, and she did not have sex with her students but rather showed them pictures of her having sex with someone else.
“Semen” is the theme in the news today, including this story: Teen Sends Student Semen-Frosted Brownies; a funny brownie story from my past.
and quite frankly I could not read the other spooge stories…

I think I finally have figured out why I am getting so much hate mail about the lack of Treo stuff in my podcast: podcastalley has be placed in the ‘technology’ section. New Voting System at Podcastalley
So I guess all of the funny business going on with the voting over at podcastalley finally got the better of the admin. They have changed the system (for the better I suppose). Now, you can vote once a month for a podcast, there is no “star” rating system, and the tallys are displayed as a monthly total.
What does this mean?
It means that the TPC went from 47 to 126 over night, and is currently being hammered by casts that have less than half the votes. But the month jsut started and therefore so has the talley.
So once again under the heading of ‘if you don’t ask…’ please take just a second and go cast a vote for the TPC – I’d really appreciate it.

03/03 "Cranky Bald-Dog" TPC
Thursday, March 03, 2005
A cranky TPC for today… not “family safe” audio. (a little cursing here and there). Why so cranky today? And why the unscheduled TPC? Well, yesterday’s recording got all messed up somewhere in the encoding process, and I can’t figure out why. So today I recording another episode using the new version of P.A.R. Pro, v2.4. It does not say that it fixes anything specific on the Treo 600 – the changes are mostly to fix issues on the Treo 650 – but what the heck? This is, after all, an experiment.
A short discussion between “grilling” and “bar-b-q” and my “cure” for a hangover…

Beer butt chicken
On the front page of today’s Houston Chronicle: ducks. That’s right, ducks. The most important piece of information that Houstonian’s need to know today involves ducks crossing the streets of Houston.
The City of Houston is looking to implement a municipal wireless network system.
The Supreme Court is hear a case about a “Ten Commandments” monument on display in Texas…
So then I went to the “real” news:
- Leno is getting hosed by Michael Jackson
- To date the US owes 7 million virgins for all the terrorists that have died
- PITA – savetoby.com – downfall of PayPal – stupider things have happened
- The naked guy in Iowa who threatened his neighbors with a 2.5 ft. sword – if convicted he could have 2 years in jail and a $5,000 fine
- Alabama is no longer regulating dueling – it’s about time they opened it up to free market forces
And that’s it. Well, for the most part. Hopefully this upload won’t have the same technical issues as yesterday’s. Although, I kind of wish it did, if for no other reason to know that I reproduced the issue. If I can’t reproduce it then I can’t fix it.
And, oh yea… the wedding photos I found…
