Free Space, Free Bandwith...
Sunday, February 27, 2005
I talked in last Wednesday’s show that mobilepodcast.org had consolidated a lot of resources and data and freed up a significant amount of server storage space. So now we want to put that space and bandwidth to good use, and help out podcasters at the same time.
How?
We’re giving it away. That’s right. We have ten blocks of space (75megs each) to give away. Just ask. Email me with your name, email address of record, desired user name and desired password. I’ll send you an FTP address with 75megs of space for you to host your podcast files.
The only rules are that you can’t do anything illegal – that includes violating copyright laws.
So if you have been thinking of starting a podcast and need some cheap space, or simply are not getting enough bandwidth with your current host, let me know… I’ll hook you up.

Microsoft's OS Verification
Wednesday, February 16, 2005
I was having trouble getting ‘autoplay’ to work on my XP Pro machine when I inserted a memory stick. A quick search pointed me to a Microsoft program called AutoFix which was reported to be able to fix my problem. When I tried to download it, however, I was asked to verify the authenticity of my operating system installation.
In all fairness, it was optional. But i went ahead and agreed just to see what happened. Guess what? You cannot successfully verify your operating system’s authenticity if you are using Mozilla or Firefox – you have to use IE.
What a crock.
So I finally declined and downloaded the file… much to my surprise, it worked like a champ. Check the comments if you’d like a copy…

A "Red Faced Texan" TPC for 02/16
It seems lately there has been a rash of embarrassing news coming out of Texas… beginning with the “non” demonstration staged by a few local PITA supporters.

The “Love In” was supposed to call the attention of Houstonians to the benefits of being vegetarian. They failed, however, to call attention to much at all. Perhaps these PITA activists should have checked with PITA first. Then they would have found that they were protesting in a city that PITA calls one of the top ten vegetarian-friendly cities in the country.

And then there is the ex-wife of Astros Baseball star Jeff Bagwell. The ex-Mrs. Bagwell sold her cleavage on eBay for advertising. I don’t know if she had a air-tight pre-nump or perhaps just a bad lawyer, but apparently she’s strapped for cash. Maybe now she can afford that (other) double-wide…

And lastly is the article about the woman charged with killing her husband using a sherry enema. (Sorry, no pictures on this one.) I was not going to talk about this one at first, but it keeps coming up in the news. Now she claims that he gave himself the enema, and had been doing so for years. It was the fastest way for him to get drunk… he was over 4x the legal limit when he died. But now she has testified that he used to swap enema recipes over the internet and among his favorites were the sherry recipe and a coffee recipe…

Red-light cameras are coming to Houston, and I think I saw my first one the other day. How does this work exactly? Is the private company “deputised” to enforce the law?
Cut to the chase: don’t bother, they both suck…

Treo application recommendation: TreoAlarm. Neat little application that gives you eight customisable alarms plus a great little weather report. It can even be set to retrieve this report (from the National Weather Service) at a particular time in the morning, although it only takes seconds… It’s still in beta so there is no charge at the moment.

Just taking a little time today to get ready for the next podcast…

But I had to use my spare time and get outside for a little while. Last week we were in the 50’s, and today we’re going to hit 79 degrees…

And not a cloud in the sky!

Violets in February?
It’s been an interesting week here in Houston. Today the temperature is 59 degrees… the coldest it’s been in a week or two. Cold – hot – cold – hot – no wonder my plants are messed up…
What’s talked about today?
The Super Bowl of course… not a major event for me. Let’s face it, the best thing about the game was the stage used during the half-time show…
There were a few good commercials. If you missed them, you can watch them online over at ifilm.com.
My favorites included Ameriquests’ “Cat Killer” ad…

FedEx’s “Dancing Burt” commercial…

And of course, the McIlhenny Tabasco: “Tanlines” ad…

American’s have nothing on British sports fans, though. Like this guy who cut off his jewels in response to the Welsh victory over England in Rugby.
No one I know got that excited over the Super Bowl, although there are a few I have not heard back from yet…
Then a little talk of Rice’s visit to Paris…
The Houston rail system is on hold because the Federal Transit Administration’s funding recommendations for 2006 don’t include the train. All in all, the Chronicle’s front page gets a “B” today… only one overt jab (albeit very un-creative) at Bush.
Steroid use in high school… words of wisdom from Jose Conseco on the subject. But then again, what drug could baseball players use?
Woman sues girls for delivering cookies… I sent my doctor a bill… and being anti-social can actually good for your health… and I am thinking of filing a suit against one of the mother’s at school…
Lawyer jokes are now permissible under the law, so of course I had to tell my favorite.
And of course, yet one more (hot) teacher gets caught having an affair with a student. Sad, though really… I mean, this is getting old isn’t it?

The high(er) cost of unlocked 650's
Sunday, February 06, 2005
Engadget has a little blurb on how to unlock your T650. Basically, they say it can be done by typing in: *#*#1234# and then pressing the center D-pad button. Could it really be that easy?

Testing out a new headset (the Quietspot from Shure) and I'd really like to know what you think

I like the Quietspot, but it seems to have an issue with the Treo 600s keyboard backlight, not to mention the fact that its kind of ugly to be wearing around town.
Quick review of the Aiptek Sound Capsule mentioned earlier in the blog. short answer? Its great as a backup player or a pocket SD-card drive.
and what about Aipteks DV5300?
You get what you pay for. If you have $100, its great. If you have $500, check out Sony's DSC-M1.

Also mentioned in tonights podcast: an update on Houston's "Safe/Clear" program, Houston is the #1 city in the nation with regards to donations to the Red Cross's Tsunami relief fund, and I got a birthday present in the mail (yes, I LIKE the Post Office) from Big Brother himself.
