BBC Article on Podcasting
This appeared, dated December 30 - but I'd swear I'd read this before somewhere...
People can wake up in the morning, pick up their iPods as they go to work or before they go exercise, and discover that there's all this new content automatically put onto their players

T-Mobile Cuts Internet Access for Blackberry Users?
Thursday, December 23, 2004
Seems weird, but it's true. Weirder still, they did not mean to, and yet a month has passed and they still have not fixed it? You can read all about it over at tinyscreenfuls.com.
Apparently they are not trying to create a boycott, or hammer T-Mobile... they are just trying to create enough chatter so that T-Mobile will get it fixed. So check it out and if you are a T-Mobile customer maybe there's a way you can help.

Rumor Mill Update: Was Sprint Nextel Arranged by Apple?
Saturday, December 18, 2004
Motorola apparently has announced that it is the co-developer of the Apple branded cell phone. Also, they happen to call Nextel their biggest customer. So could it be that Apple actually drove Nextel into the arms of Sprint in order to provide the high-speed network for Apple's services? Afterall, Sprint is in a better position to get a high-speed network on-line sooner than Nextel. And there's no way that Nextel would sell to Verizon.
Of course, there are mumblings that Nextel might leave Sprint at the alter in favor of, perhaps, T-Mobile. But with T-Mobile stating that they are not in a position to provide such a network for at least 2 more years (while Sprint is set to begin construction in 2005), it looks like Sprint and Nextel will make it through the ceremony. The real question is 'how will the relationship fair after taking Motorola and Apple on the honeymoon?'

Power Laws
Friday, December 17, 2004
A link to this article was sent out through one of the Yahoo groups and I think it hits the nail on the head rather well... certainly better than my last podcast.
The dilemma for other Podcasters, however, is the Pod Squad. The Pod Squad is a group of Podcasts that Curry "runs with". Collectively, they seem to provide extensive cross-linking between each other and hardly ever skip an episode without mentioning each other. Naturally this serves to reinforce the reputations and listenership of all the members of the squad.Interesting take on what is happening right now within the accelerated, micro-universe that is podcasting. Like I said on Thursday, historically these trends take years, sometimes decades to evolve.

A Dr. Phil Moment
Thursday, December 16, 2004
I caught a little PSA on TV tonight titled "A Dr. Phil Minute" in which Dr. Phil gave his tips for handling marital strife. Seemed kind of silly, so I recorded a quick spoof. Of course, I sound nothing like Dr. Phil, but I thought it was funny in any case.
It was short enough too that I thought I would send it out to 'openpodcast.org' as a little advertisement for the site. So if you got this one twice, I apologize... at least it's short.

Science @ NASA Feature Stories Podcast
Just saw this in a Podcastalley forum: NASA's 'Science@NASA' is producing a podcast. The description reads:
The Science and Technology Directorate at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center sponsors the Science@NASA web sites. The mission of Science@NASA is to help the public understand how exciting NASA research is and to help NASA scientists fulfill their outreach responsibilities.
I have not heard it yet, but I am excited to see these types of things popping up.

A lengthy, and rather unfocused, Treo Podcast
Wow. I need to get focused. Once more I have a rambling podcast for today. And long too. About an hour - I think this might be my longest. So what was so important? Nothing really:
- Snow in Houston for Christmas?
- Grocery stores suck
- Red oreos and their effects on your digestion
- Red toothpaste
- Houston referenced in The West Wing
- Russian Oil Fight Lands in Houston
- HISD Superintendent - $370k a year, and no plan
- Engineers hurry to create better was of dealing with LNG
- Sept. 11 Conspiracy Reward
The commercialization of podcasting - for or against? and how does the "prince of pod" feel about it?

Tonight at 8:00pm CST is another exciting episode. You can listen live on the internet at this streaming audio location. Or if you check out KPFT's website you can pick up a Realaudio stream.
Also too I'll hopefully be participating in the real fun in the IRC room: irc.sc.com, #techbytes.
Or I think you can go to GeekRadio's webite and use their Java client, if you don't like IRC.

Feedburner is back up with mobilepodcast.org
It took longer for FeedBurner it pickup on the new DNS than most others, but they have it now and my RSS feeds once again are working. What a great day... unless of course you are the owner of this vehicle...
Not really sure what happened here. I snapped this photo on the way to a client's office this morning. There were no other cars around, so I don't know if it was a collision. And the owner was no where to be seen... neither were any cops or tow-trucks for that matter. And "yes" - the traffic is flowing pretty well around the car...

12/14 Treo Podcast
Tuesday, December 14, 2004
Low-key podcast today... coming off the recent battles in the ISP wars. But happy now that Barron Hosting is my new home. Included in today's cast:
- The Houston Chronicle sucks - 75% of section "A" is advertisements. It really must be depressing to know, as a reporter for the Chronicle, that you are only there to fill the space that cannot be sold...
- Huge shortage of tomatoes sends shock waves throughout Houston
- HISD has a new, and highly paid, superintendent
- A shootout in the Heights
- Santa in Atlanta beats the crap out of woman with a 2x4
- Scott Peterson and the jury - WTF?
- George Michael and Elton John = CAT FIGHT!
- BONEHEAD: Drug dealer holds sale in front of sheriff's house

New Home, Same Look....
Monday, December 13, 2004
And all is right with the world once again. Thanks to Jimmy Jett and Barron Hosting, this site (as well as several others I maintain) have a new home... a better home...
And of course, after days and days of discussions with my "old" ISP, it wasn't until I had migrated the first of my many sites over to Barron that I received the following message from my current host:
Dear Customer,
We have restored the ability of our servers to accept passive FTP connections. If you continue to have issues with this account please open a new trouble ticket and we will investigate it immediately.
Sorry guys... too little, too late. Barron has offered me better service at a better price.

If something happens to me...
Sunday, December 12, 2004
So if something happens to mobilepodcast.org, it's because my ISP has shut me down. They have decided that there is no way to secure their servers and still provide access to Blogger.com (which I know is not correct) and I think they are getting somewhat annoyed. So if you check into our site in the next couple of days and we're no longer here....
SEND HELP! :)

Bonus Treo Podcast 12/12

Shut Down by "The Man"
Wow. That sucked... and still does I guess.
I use blogger to produce my blog here at mobilepodcast.org and last week my ISP decided to forbid "passive FTP" file transfers. This, in effect, locked blogger from updating my site. It took this long to figure out the problem because of the other blogs I maintain with my ISP and blogger that didn't break.
The effect though, is that those listeners who subscribe to my full feed are just now getting my Thursday podcast, whereas those who subscibe to the 'podcast only' feed got it when they should have.
Oh, well.

Getting back to our roots
I had an email from someone today claiming that I am cheating when I create my "Treo Podcast." Aside from the fact that we have seriously deviated from the original technical experiment of podcasting from a Treo phone in favor of simply having fun, the author was somewhat correct.
Various clips, including the "Battlestar" mix that I have been using as my intro were not, themselves, created on the Treo. They were mixed together on a PC and then transfered to an SD card where they were then inserted (using the Treo) into the podcast. So in a sense I suppose the emailer is correct.
So today's podcast, which will be posted a litte later on this afternoon, is a "back to our roots" production. Everything that you will hear has been recorded on the Treo - in some cases by literally holding the phone up to a radio or television - and then pasted together on the phone using P.A.R. Pro (Personal Audio Recorder Professional).
At first I started using PC generated clips because I wanted better quality, but I think you will find that today's podcast sounds pretty good. Not as good as Curry's of course, but then that's not what I am shooting for.
So stay tuned (so to speak) - the "Back to Our Roots" podcast will be out this afternoon - or maybe this evening.... not really sure...
