Thursday, October 28, 2004
Sorry for the mood today… I hope you understand. Here are some of the highlights and links from today's episode:
The cool moon eclipse from last night...
Hattip to Harold J. Johnson at SomethingthatHappened.com
Check out this Old Time Radio internet radio station
And this website on OTR
From the news:
Ellen Simonetti and her Delta blog fiasco
The parrot that saved the day, and the Hobbits
And for the Treo 600 users out there be sure to check out Brightcam
Also, a note that there is a new DivX file added to the DivX feed: Bush giving the camera "the bird." Formatted for playback on the Treo 600 but compatible with any DivX player. And one note for those Treo users who are using MMPLAYER for video… add http://www.infostructuresolutions.com/~treocast/casts/bushfinger.avi to your play list and you can stream this video right to your phone!

Last time... I promise....
Wednesday, October 27, 2004
Just a quick note... the feed addresses have changed again. I switched to feedburner, now that they are supporting enclosures and can give me some stats. (Thanks to Jonathan for the tip).

Short Cast Today
A short podcast today, and no DivX cast... sorry. Too many things going on. No time to play. Special 'thanks' to msmobiles.com for the 'heads up' on their Treo 650 review podcast. Sounds like a great phone, although I think I am going to wait for the WiFi... too much invested in this unit to spend another $600 on an upgrade that does not have WiFi. But who knows... once I see it I am sure my gadget fever will kick in.

Curry Goes Mobile
Did you catch Adam Curry's podcast today? He recorded the intro in his car on the way back from buying an MP3 recorder. That's what I am talking about! If it only had a few basic editing features and a connection to the net he could have been done by the time his car hit the driveway.

A DivX Cast?
Sure! Why not? Don't know exactly what you would call it, but the web cam was on during the podcast this morning, so I slapped the audio onto video recording (it's off just a tad) and ran it through my batch encoder.
By default my encoder converts for playback on the Treo 600, but it will play on any DivX device... it's just going to be 160 x 160.

RSS Feed Address Change
Just wanted to remind anyone who is subscribing the my podcasts that the RSS feed address has changed. The new address is:
http://www.infostructuresolutions.com/~treocast/casts/podcast.php
I gave updated the old address but since I have to do it manually I am only going to keep it updated for the next day or two... please make sure you change your aggregators.

Treo Podcast 10/25 Notes
Today's cast included another change in the encoding to 22,050 Hz. This resulted in a good sounding podcast by cut the upload time in half.
We also played around with posting already recorded sound files into the podcast. Seems to have worked well. This was done use P.A.R. Pro (Personal Audio Recorder Professional).
News items that were mention:
Macs do Star Wars dirty work
Scooby-Doo break world record
Vote Homer for President
Thanks to everyone that has been providing support and encouragement!

Creating the RSS File
Sunday, October 24, 2004
Well, I have been struggling with this one since I started this experiment. To date I have resorted to using yBasic on my Treo. I wrote a little basic program to create the RSS file and then I uploaded it to the server. But no more.
Today I came across a PHP script from Another Hungry Mind to Feed that solves my problem. This great little script creates the RSS output on the fly. It reads the directory in which it is placed and creates the output with necessary enclosure statements containing any new MP3 files it finds.
Thanks so much!
Please make sure if you are using an aggregator program to receive my podcasts that you change the link... it's over there on the right.

Tracking Feed Usage
Friday, October 22, 2004
Here's a question I thought I would throw out there: is there anyway to track how many users are downloading my RSS feed? Searched a little on the web and have not found anything useful yet, so I thought I would ask... thanks.

Most Successful So Far
First of all, I would like to thank openpodcast.org for... well... existing. First for the opportunity to be heard, but also for what I learned this afternoon: that they 'ping' audio.weblogs.com, which I think has really helped in getting my poscasts out. I have not yet figured that one out; if anyone has any information and/or instructions I would really appreciate it.
The higher bit rate recording on my phone made today's cast sound much better. The new SD cards was well worth it. Plus I have more storage for my videos. BONUS!
To all that have tuned in I would also like to say thanks. As always, constructive criticism is always welcomed.
Tomorrow, or Sunday (but probably Monday) I am going to see how well I can work sound clips into my cast. Once that is perfected then I am going to try to construct a cast from several clips... this "doing it all in one take" is a lot harder than I thought.

Podcasting from a Treo 600 Cell Phone
Well, it may not sound so good... yet. But it can be done. Podcasting - from a Treo 600 cell phone. The entire cast was recorded using a Treo (bumper music and all) and then FTP'd to a server where it was automatically encoded and distributed. The quality is not great, but that will come with practice.
Stay tuned for information on the process... what works and what doesn't. And also for more information, tips, and tricks to help you get the most from your Treo 600.
