AT&T is now offering a wireless device for home that provides all the basics: voice service, news, weather, email, intercom, calendar, etc. It seems a bit bulky, and at $299 ($499 without discount) a bit expensive, so its not something that I think we'll try out. But I could easily see my mother getting one and calling me over to come set it up.
