Hey. My name is Russell Holliman. I'm a professional project manager by day, and one of the founders of Podcast Ready by night. This is my blog about life on the web, life in general, and random things I find here and there.

Whats up with Netflix's delivery queues?

I've been a customer of Netflix since 2002. In all that time, the most I've ever had to wait for a movie in my queue is "short wait" which usually equated to one cycle (receive and return) of movie viewing. More often though movies have been immediately available, even the new releases.

Recently though all of the shows I want to watch are marked "very long wait." I realize that these new releases are popular (Kung Fu Panda and Hellboy II) but that's never been an issue in the past. So what's changed?

I don't have inside knowledge but i would guess that they are trying to reduce costs by purchasing lower numbers of popular titles. At some point, of course, this will mean that it's easier to get titles at your local video store, leading to cancelled and downgraded subscriptions, leading to lower revenue, etc.

Just a theory though.

we're certainly rethinking our membership. i just found Kung Fu Panda on iTunes. we just stick the disks into the Mac Mini that's connected to the TV anyways. getting it from iTunes makes it more convenient for the kids. sorry Netflix...

Netflix still beats out iTunes (by a wide margin) if you like independent and foreign films. There are other options for that (like Green Cine) but with Netflix you can also mix in the blockbuster stuff you want to see. However, that doesn't mean I might not cut back from 3 disks at a time to 2 or 1 if there are other options to get what I want.

I have also noticed that the turnaround on disks seems to have slowed a little bit.
