Hey. My name is Russell Holliman. I'm a professional project manager by day, and one of the founders of Podcast Ready by night. This is my blog about life on the web, life in general, and random things I find here and there.

Why I'm not getting a Palm Foleo

I'm an early adopter, a Palm lover (I'm talking about the devices here people), and a mobile gadget freak. Seems like a 'no brainer' that I'd be out buying a Foleo right now. I'm not.

Is it because it won't use any of the applications I've already purchased for my Treo? Or perhaps the fact that it doesn't do anything that my Treo can't already do? Maybe its the a 5 hour battery on a device connected to my Treo that only has <2 hours of juice when using BT and data? And then there's always the honkin $499 (with rebate) price.

Its none of these. The reason I am not getting a Foleo is because it requires my Treo 700p to connect to the internet, and my 700p has a broken bluetooth stack - its been broken since the day I got it. I can connect my laptop to the phone via bluetooth once - sometimes twice - but then I have to reset the phone if I want to connect again.

If I am feeling really lazy, I can simply connect a different bluetooth device (like my Motorola headset) and let the phone reset itself.

Treo Central has a lot of discussions about the 700p's issues (this is currently my favorite one) and Palm is aware and has promised to fix things, but to date they have only managed to release new Treo's, and now Foleo's.

Sorry Palm. Even though I think this Foleo is going to be a flop, I'd have considered it if I wasn't still getting screwed by my last Palm purchase.

I agree that the jury is out on whether the Foleo will be successful. I like the strategy in providing a larger screen and keyboard. I think it has a lot of potential for people who travel and need quick access to information. Only time will tell.
